What are Essential Oils and How are they made?

Essential oils are the oils that plants produce naturally. The oils that the plants produce are why they naturally attract insects such as bees, butterflies, and beetles, just by the smell that they let off. By using essential oils we get benefits similar to the plants. Essential oils can give us natural benefits and protection including – antimicrobial, antibacterial, and anti-fungal just to name a few.

I know the word chemical sounds unhealthy and is called toxins. However, when were are talking about essential oils it’s not toxic or unhealthy if used correctly because of the oils that the plant releases are called the chemicals of the plant.

The chemicals and properties of each and every change with the plants and what type of environment they are in. When searching for 100% pure essential oils look for ones that show the GC/MS tests, these tests will make sure that the oils fall within the acceptable range for that plant. If you find essential oils and they do not have a way to look up those tests for each oil it is best to steer clear of that particular brand because it cannot be proven that they meet the recommended guidelines. Also, some oil suppliers will dilute essential oils with a carrier oil or other ingredients to make them cheaper.

Using essential oils with care is important because they are highly concentrated and should not be used directly on the skin without proper dilution. Also, essential oils should NEVER be ingested they are too concentrated.

There are two ways to get essential oils: Steam Distilling which is done by cooking the plant materials and Cold Pressing which is done by squishing the oils out of the plant. Any leftover water from processing the essential oils is then turned into hydrosol which is therapeutic but just diluted form and is a water base.
